I often find Helen pottering in her garden when I visit. Either that or she is building something.

She and her partner James have been an inspiration to Steven (my partner) and I in our quest to grow food in our suburban garden. They motivated us to get our first worm farm and compost bin almost 10 years ago and over the years have given us innumerable tips on composting and growing fruits and veggies in the challenging soils of the Hawkesbury Sandstone Country on which we live. I love that Helen is keen to walk her talk and thought her story might also inspire you.

I first met Helen after she purchased her first home in the ‘Valley’ — a small pocket of suburbia on the edge of Berowra Valley National Park — more than 18 years ago now. She is part of the ‘Valley Sisterhood’, a group of women who met in this neighbourhood. We are now life-long friends, committed to supporting each other through the highs and lows of life.
